Natural History Museum Reopens

The National Museum of Ireland reopened the 'Dead Zoo' building on 29 April 2010. Following closure in 2007 the building has seen some restoration works and will have improved access and new learning spaces. The Natural History Museum was built by the Royal Dublin Society and opened its doors for the first time in 1857. Over 150 years later it has changed little and is known to generations as the ‘Dead Zoo' a true museum of a museum.

Following the collapse of a section of the stone staircase in July 2007 the building was closed. After safety testing of the remaining stairs staff were allowed to return to offices in November 2007. A decision was taken at that time by the NMI, OPW and DAST to proceed with the major refurbishment plan. While that plan was being developed the change in state finances meant that the sum (€15 million) allocated under the NDP was no longer available. The decision was taken in early 2009 to carry out basic works to allow the building to reopen, something that was completed in April 2010.

What makes for an engaging museum installation?

Dr. Eva Hornecker, University of Strathclyde, UK
Thursday 15 April 14:30-15:30
Admission is free and all are welcome

University of Limerick, Room: KB118 (Kemmy Business School Building)

The talk will discuss findings and observations from two studies of museum installations, focussing on aspects that contribute to their success in terms of visitor engagement and the social 'user experience'. The talk is based on the mixed-method evaluation of a long-term exhibition containing about 20 interactive stations in the Technical Museum in Vienna, and an observational study in the Museum of Natural History in Berlin, which has recently been reopened and features several innovative installations by the media design company art+com. My observations highlight how social interactions around the installation can enrich the actual installation (and form an essential part of the experience), the role of physicality and physical setup, and how contextual embedding can support indexing between contents of an installation and the physical exhibition.

Dr Eva Hornecker is a Lecturer in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK. In previous lives, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Pervasive Interaction Lab at the Open University and the University of Sussex (working on the Equator project) in the UK, and an Acting Lecturer at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and at the TU Vienna in Austria. She wrote a PhD thesis on 'Tangible Interfaces as a medium for collaboration support' at the University of Bremen. Her research interests concern multimodal, tangible and embodied interaction, CSCW, user research, design methods, and qualitative research methods for understanding user interaction with 'beyond the desktop' technologies.

EMYA is open for applications for 2011. The Awards are available to newly-opened or refurbished museums. The European Museum Forum operates under the auspices of the Council of Europe. The European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) was founded in 1977 under the auspices of the Council of Europe, with the aim of recognising excellence at the European museum scene and to encourage innovative processes in a world which was then still basically focused on collections rather than on their use for the benefit of society.

This is the main award in the scheme, and goes to a museum which contributes most directly to attracting and satisfying its visitors with unique atmosphere, imaginative interpretation and presentation, creative approach to education and social responsibility. Past winners have been both large and small museums, but all have developed something which is special and has changed the standards of quality in museums within Europe.

Museums Matter goes on display at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life

Press Release

From De Lorean cars to a priceless Caravaggio; and from the Ardagh Chalice to a bedpan from Ballyhaunis, Irish museums have something for everyone.

This rich variety in museum collections across the island of Ireland is being celebrated in a colourful new exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Castlebar, running until 25th April.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Museums Matter: Accessing Ireland's Heritage', is a collaborative, cross-border project developed by the Irish Museum's Association Its key aims are to showcase some of attractions housed in the 400 museums and heritage centres the length and breadth of Ireland, and to convey the enjoyment and inspiration on offer to people of all ages.

The exhibition - which is free-of-charge - will see the first outing of the pre-Independence signage from Castlebar's old post office, which was acquired by the Museum last December. Also on display are a paddling currach made for the Museum by Andy McGonagal of Kincasslagh, and a set of golf clubs sold by Clery's Department Store, Dublin in the 1930s - eat your heart out Padraic Harrington!

Those attending the exhibition will also be able to get to grips with real museum artefacts and replicas thanks to a special handling collection which includes a Bronze Age axe, a drinking horn and a Viking spoon and knife.

"Many people in the north and south of Ireland enjoyed visiting museums as schoolchildren," says Mr Paul Doyle, Chair of the IMA. "Perhaps they saw the Tara Brooch and the Cross of Cong at the National Museum, or paintings by Vermeer or Jack Yeats at the National Gallery, or participated in living history projects at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. At the IMA, we felt that we could present a glimpse of the wonderful treasures in our collections, providing colourful images of the objects we look after, and let people know better what we do and what we can offer them."

The exhibition is accompanied by a booklet describing Ireland's museums and their collections; an AV presentation and activity sheets, all of which are available from the IMA website. More information is also available at www.museum.ie .

The exhibition is funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (Museums Council of Northern Ireland). Admission is free.

Opening times: Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm; Sunday, 2pm to 5pm. Closed Mondays (inc. Bank Holidays).

To complete an online questionnaire Click here.

In the on-line survey itself:

Some questions require an answer and are identified with an asterisk (*) and some questions give the opportunity to provide an additional answer/comment to the same question.

If you cannot get to the next page it probably means there is a question on the current page that still needs an answer before you can proceed to the next page. Red text shows you where.

If you want to go back a page use the 'previous page' button at the foot of the page - not your browser back button.
You can get back to any page or questions up until the time you click on the 'done' button on the last page.
Please do provide any extra information, suggestions, products, recommendations, links or ideas in the 'Optional' answer boxes whenever you can.

Irish Sporting Heritage Symposium

'Places to Play: Ireland's Sporting Heritage' takes place on Wednesday 13th January 2010 at Boston College, 42 St Stephen's Green, Dublin 2, beginning at 09.30 am. Attendance at the event is free, and will include lunch. Places are limited so to reserve your place please send an email to Claire McGowan by clicking here. Once you have confirmed attendance, full details of the event will be forwarded to you.

This event is part of a research project being undertaken by Boston College on behalf of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism. The aim is to uncover what elements of sporting heritage are out there, whether they have any architectural merit, and how sporting sites came to evolve. Inherent in this investigation is a study of the transformation of sporting sites from their origins, through the process of enclosure and re-development.

The aim of the symposium is to bring together leading figures in the area from academia, the heritage industry and sports organisations. The day will feature a mix of lectures and roundtable discussions, and will allow the issues circulating sporting heritage in Ireland to be aired in full. This is a developing area in Ireland, and one that will become an ever more important issue in future years which sports bodies, councils and government will all have to address.

Speakers at the event include
Prof Douglas Booth University of Otago, New Zealand
Prof John Bale University of Keele, UK
Kevin Baird Irish Heritage Trust
Dr Roisin Higgins Irish Sporting Heritage Project
Peter McKenna Croke Park
Orla Strumble Irish Greyhound Board

The Glucksman Recovery Fund

As a result of the unprecedented flooding in Cork city on Thursday evening, 19 November 2009, the Lewis Glucksman Gallery has suffered extensive flood damage to its basement. The flooding poses a severe problem for the gallery, as the basement area housed the art stores, a major plant area and the kitchens. The recovery operation began as soon as the gallery was alerted and with the support of UCC's Buildings + Estates, initially focused on pumping water from the basement and ground floor to clear a safe passage to the art store. The recovery operation progressed over the weekend of 21 and 22 November with a team of conservation experts working with the gallery staff to access and respond to the damage. The art in storage at the time of the flooding included works by significant artists such as Hughie O’Donoghue, Louis le Brocquy and Martin Gale.

The Glucksman Gallery is grateful for all the support it has received to date which has allowed the gallery to respond to this unprecedented situation with maximum effect. The gallery now faces a major financial challenge to reinstate the award-winning building for public use, and to restore damaged works in the collection. If you would like to make a donation to the Glucksman Recovery Fund, you can do so by:

a) making a cheque payable to Lewis Glucksman Gallery and sending to Fiona Kearney, Director, Lewis Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork, Ireland.

b) by credit card by calling + 353 21 4902760 with details of the payment you wish to make

c) logging on to the UCC website at http://www.ucc.ie/cuf-realex/ and completing the online donation form. Please select the Lewis Glucksman Gallery Fund from the list of drop down options provided.

All payments are gratefully received. Please include your contact details so that we can acknowledge your contribution. Both the Lewis Glucksman Gallery and Cork University Foundation are registered charities and donations of €250 or more may be tax exempt. The Lewis Glucksman Gallery and Cork University Foundation will issue receipts for all donations which can be filed with your annual revenue returns. Thank you for your support.

Museum Transport Collections

Museum Transport Collections is being the Heritage Council on 23 June in the Hilton Dublin City Hotel, Charlemont Place, Dublin 2 (beside the Luas Green line stop 'Charlemont' on the canal). Under the National Development Plan provision has been made for the development of a Transport Museum. However, there is little understanding of the diversity and needs of these collections. Similarly the demand, and scale, of conservation needs fall outside available budgets for the Heritage Council. The purpose of the Policy Day is to to engage with the diversity of sectoral interests (rail and road) to begin the process of mapping a way forward for such collections nationally. See their programme for details. Contact Ms Martina Malone at martina@heritagecouncil.com if you wish to attend.
