The IMA has announced Cork as the location of the Museum Basics Course for 2017. Held in partnership with Cork County Council's heritage office, please contact the County Heritage Officer for further information.

Museum Basics is a foundation course that offers a practical introduction to the nature, context and operations of museums with the intention of providing practical examples and indicators of good practice and where and how further information can be found.

Modules cover an Introduction to Museums; Management & Governance; Conservation; Display; Collection Care; Documentation; External Relations; and Education & Access. The course is typicaly presented over 4 days, usually on Saturdays over a 4-week period.

Museum Basics is managed and delivered by the IMA. In 2013 courses were held in County Kerry, supported by Kerry County Council, and in Galway City, supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. In 2014 the IMA provided a course in West Cork through West Cork Development Partnership and in 2015, it was held in the Luan Gallery, Athlone, supported by Athlone Arts and Tourism.

Due to limited availability, the IMA does currently not currently accept requests from individuals for places on the Museum Basics course.

Invitations are issued through the local authority museum, development organisation and/or Heritage or Arts Officer. Please contact these directly to request or check whether a course is being planned in your locality.

If you are a museum or organisation interested in partnering with the IMA and hosting a course in your district in 2017/2018, contact the IMA Director of Operations, Gina O'Kelly, on office@irishmuseums.org.
