This one‐day workshop will familiarise participants with the methods employed by Dr Joyce Townsend for the analysis of the materials and techniques used by the great British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775‐1851) in creating his works on paper. Dr Townsend will present the results of her many years of research into the materials of Turner, followed by a round‐up of issues to consider when analyzing works of art. The workshop will offer a special opportunity for participants to view the watercolours in the collection at the National Gallery of Ireland, which will be discussed in relation to the artist's use of materials and working practice.
