The Duke of Leinster, Maurice FitzGerald, will officially open a conference entitled Carton and the FitzGeralds. The one-day conference is organised by the Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses and Estates (CSHIHE) at NUI Maynooth, to coincide with National Heritage Week 2010, in collaboration with Carton and the Mallaghan family.
Various aspects of the history of Carton and of the Duke's family, the FitzGeralds, will be discussed at the conference by some of the leading authorities in the field. Topics will include: Carton House and demesne; Maynooth Castle; the Earls of Kildare; the Dukes and Duchesses of Leinster; the FitzGerald women; marriages and children; Lord Edward FitzGerald and the 1798 rebellion; politics and patronage; art and architecture; music and dancing; material culture; the development of Maynooth town; the Great Famine; the break-up and sale of the Leinster estate; landlords and tenants; Leinster House.
