The Ireland National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) is partnering with Age & Opportunity to celebrate International Museum Day (May 18th) as part of the annual Bealtaine Festival 2019 and invite you to host an event at your museum.
International Museum Day (IMD) is the annual celebration of the amazing work carried out at museums across the world. Last year saw many Irish museums participate along with over 40,000 other museums in 158 countries.
This year's theme, ‘Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition' highlights the importance of intergenerational learning and the role museums play in safeguarding and promoting engagement with our heritage for people of all ages; presenting a perfect opportunity to consider how we can reimagine our museums, as much as we might wish to reimagine or reinvent ourselves, no matter what age we might be.
Bealtaine is Ireland's only festival that celebrates the arts and creativity as we age and is one of Irelands' largest festivals with close to 100,000 people attending events each May. Through the festival, Bealtine aims to create greater access to, and representation in, the arts and creativity for all older people across the country. With your participation, Ireland's National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) aims to create greater awareness of your museum's excellent work and to encourage intergenerational events which involve older people as core and valued members of our communities.
Bealtaine/IMD themed events you might want to explore include transcription events (transcribathons), talks on hidden histories, performances, residencies, reminiscence sessions, or other projects that celebrate our creativity as we age.
