Unlocking prosperity through heritage led regeneration, Derry-Londonderry. 11-12 October 2018 (Conference)

Derry Inner City Building Preservation Trust in partnership with Derry City and Strabane District Council, the Department for Communities, the Irish Walled Towns Network (Heritage Council of Ireland), Ulster University and the City of London is organising a two-day conference in Derry, Northern Ireland on 11 and 12 October 2018.

Entitled Unlocking prosperity through heritage led regeneration, the conference is part of the build up to the 400th Anniversary of the completion of the historic walls in 2019 and is also a European Year of Cultural Heritage event.

The conference will examine best national and international heritage-led regeneration practices to drive prosperity in our towns and cities. Using examples from other national and international locations, discussion will focus on maximising the regeneration potential of the historic Walled City of Derry and its environs. It will focus on how to utilise sectors such as heritage, retail, tourism, creative industries etc. as key drivers for change and prosperity. Central to discussions will be unlocking the potential of our heritage assets, as well as the specific locational challenges facing the historic Walled City of Derry. Such challenges include the visual appearance of streetscapes, the balance of residential-commercial within the city centre, the loss of business units to out-of-town retail parks and consequently the loss of vibrancy.

The conference programme will draw upon the experience and expertise of the keynote speakers, as well as panel discussions and participative workshops to explore the challenges in innovative and creative ways. Conference attendees will be encouraged to share their thoughts and areas of expertise. The emerging themes and ideas will then be presented in a panel discussion leading to agreed actions and best practice for the Walled City and its environs.

The emphasis throughout will be on bringing best practice, personal experience, innovation and creative thinking together to inform new solutions that can work effectively in the modern business environment.

Post-conference, it is envisaged that a dedicated forum will be established comprising of key stakeholders to identify measures and initiatives designed to address some of the issues raised at the event.

Keynote speakers include Stephanie Meeks, CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, USA and Matt McNulty, ex Director General of Fáilte Ireland.
